Frequently asked questions
What should I backup?
You should back up any information your business
relies on. This may include:
- Accounting and expenses
- Customer contacts and information
- Documents related to current projects
- Emails, memos, calendars and address books
- Cash register/sales logs
- Proprietary program data
- Databases
- Any file that you can't afford to lose
How secure is my data?
RDS uses asymmetric-key cryptography, one of the most
secure methods of encrypting data. Asymmetric-key cryptography
has three components:
- a public key,
- a private key
- a password
The public and private keys are randomly generated
by the ReliableBackup(tm) software, and you provide the
password. The public key is used to encrypt your data and
is stored both on your computer and on RDS servers. However,
the public key cannot decrypt your data. Decryption requires
your private key. Your private key is encrypted using your
password and sent with your backups. The only way to open
your backup is to extract the private key, and the only
way to extract the private key is to use your password.
Your password is never sent to RDS in any form and is
erased from your computer as soon as it has been used.
Where will you keep my data?
We have taken numerous steps to make sure your
information is safe with us. Our main servers are
housed in a major data center in Newark, NJ. This is
the same data center used by major credit card companies
and publicly traded companies. The facilities are manned
24 hours a day by security and technical personnel. Access
to our servers is limited by handprint identification
and proximity cards. The servers themselves are protected
by redundant internet connections and power supplies, and
battery backup. Additionally, our main servers are mirrored
on backup servers housed locally in Hunterdon County, NJ.
How can I be sure my back up is safely stored on the server?
You will receive an email each time a backup is completed
successfully. A successful backup consists of compressing
and encrypting your data, sending it to our servers, and
verifying that the file you sent is the file we received.
We do this using only the encrypted version of your data;
we never have access to your files. If there is ever a
problem, you will be notified immediately.
What happens if there is a problem with my backup?
Anytime there is a problem with a backup, including a failed
backup or scheduled backup not being received, both you and
an RDS administrator are emailed immediately. RDS will contact
you the next business day to ensure the problem is resolved,
or you can contact us by phone 24 hours a day.
When will my data be backed up?
The ReliableBackup(tm) software will automatically backup your
files outside of your hours of business to ensure a complete
file and create as little interruption as possible. You can
also send a backup anytime by selecting a schedule and
choosing ‘Backup Now’ from the Schedule menu.
Why do I need your software?
You will need to install our ReliableBackup(tm) software on
all computers that have files you want to backup. The
ReliableBackup(tm) software allows you to set up and monitor
your backups, and the software automatically performs the backups
you have scheduled. The program can run on Windows, Mac, or
Linux machines. No other software is needed.
What are the system requirements for my computer?
ReliableBackup(tm) software runs on most platforms, including
Windows and Mac OS X. The computer running ReliableBackup(tm)
software also requires a connection to the Internet. Broadband
Internet access is recommended, but not required.
